Homework: Drink Wine (Odd Reds)

This week we tasted odd reds in class, and thus, our homework was to go out and buy one of the varietals of wine we tasted and drink it for homework! It’s a rough life…

Wine:  2010 Codirosso Chianti

Price:  $12.99

Region:  Chianti region of Tuscany, Italy

Sight:  Ruby red with some purplish tint to it; clear with no particles.

Nose:  On the nose, the first thing I smelled was dark cherry followed by strawberry and raspberry. There was also a flowery aroma to it, possibly violets.

Palate:  On the palate, the wine was full of ripe fruit — cherries, strawberries, and raspberries. There was a limestone taste to it as well and oregano and pepper on the finish gave it a bit of spice.

Other notes on the wine:

Body:  2

Dry/Sweet:  2 — Dry

Acidity:  4

Tannin:  2 — I could barely feel anything on my palate.

Balance: 3/4 — Very well balanced. I was surprised for the price.

Finish:  3

Complexity:  3

I drank this wine with some Little Caesar’s pepperoni pizza and it went stupendously well together! The acidity from the wine was enough to counteract the acidity of the tomato sauce on the pizza and the fruit mixed wonderfully with the spiciness of the pepperoni. It’s amazing what a $12 bottle of wine and a $5 pizza can do for each other!

This was my last official assignment for the class, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop posting all of the delicious wines I try in my free time. Look for more “homework” in the future!
